Wine Review – Barone Ricasoli Torricella Chardonnay di Toscana IGT 2010

Published on November 15, 2011

When we hear the word, “Tuscany”, we often think of Chianti and red wine. Here is a white wine hailing from this area.  There is very little Chardonnay coming from Chianti. Indeed, the plot of land where the grapes are growing is a mere three hectares. The Barone could not resist planting the vines in this ideal Chardonnay terroir.  The land is 350 metres above sea level and the soil is full of sand and pebbles. The grapes have every chance of brilliance in this setting. The wine is lean and crisp due to the stainless steel fermentation. The palate has full contract with pineapple, yellow plums, no oak to overshadow the grape and an enjoyable mineral note on the finish.

Wine Review – Casa Brancaia XMAS Tre 2006

Now we venture into red Chianti. Sangiovese is the major grape of this region. This wine has 50% in the blend, along with 45% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The “Tre” describes not only the three grapes, but also the three vineyards they grew in. Brancaia [Castellina, Poppi [Radda] and Brancaia in Maremma [Morellino di Scansano].  The wine is medium bodied, with fine tannins and a bright bash of black berry fruit. It can easily be consumed now or held. It is easy enough to drink by itself, or with a Charcuterie plate.
