Cesarini Sforza Tridentum Brut Rose, Venice, Italy, CSPC#730813, SRP $15.00. When I taste wine, I try to keep quiet until other tasters have sampled. This discipline was taught while I went through the International Sommelier Guild program. It is easy to create suggestions in other people heads. When I say, “nice lemon zest and pepper,” the other people may say, “yes, I get that also!” People need to understand the wine as it hits their palate, not mine. When I sampled this bubbly from Northern Italy I had to slap my mouth shut; the distinctive smoky quality was so apparent. When my two tasting mates had finished, I looked at one and he said, “Smoky”. Shut the front door, was it ever! Here is a departure from the usual lemon, lime tartness. I really enjoyed this unique wine. It is a food wine – think appetizers with smoky tones . Smoked cheddar is a tough one to pair, so here is your wine pick! The price is a bargain for such good quality.
The Jumping Grape Sparkling Shiraz/Cabernet Sauvignon, Padthaway, Australia CSPC#741023 SRP $21.00. I admit I have shied away from sparkling red wines. I find them too sweet, too bland and not worth my hard earned cash. Jumping Grape is my favourite all time sparkling red. It doesn’t taste like cotton candy, but rather a dry, fruit rich, sour cherry sparkler. It is an enjoyable change from the usual bubbly. Have fun with it!
